DESY Beamline Hamburg

Lakshman did his construction management internship at the European XFEL beamline that was being constructed under the city of Hamburg. This 2 billion euro project consisted of a 5km long linear beamline that fired high energy x-rays at targets that were only nanometers in size. This project was part of the DESY - the organization that coordinates the work of all the particle accelerators in Germany.

This mega-project needed a team of 6 people just to coordinate all the construction activities taking place over ground and underground - not to mention countless scientists and engineers designing the whole thing. Every component had to enter the tunnel in exactly the right order since nothing could be rearranged afterwards.
